Opioid Help
Opioids, a class of drug that includes prescription pain medicines such as oxycodone, illegal drugs such and heroin and synthetic opioids such as fentanyl, are a serious issue in Louisiana.
In 2023, 47 people died in Ascension Parish as a result of opioids, with 41 of those as a direct result of synthetic opioids such as fentanyl. In 2018, there were 12 deaths from synthetic opioids, a 241% increase in just five years. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Statistics, Fentanyl remains the deadliest drug threat facing the United States.

Opioid Rescue Kits
Ascension Parish Government has partnered with Fire Departments across the parish to make Opioid Rescue Kits available to help reduce opiate overdose fatalities and to provide resources that will help individuals on their path to recovery. Individuals, as well as concerned friends and family members, can stop by one of the fire stations listed below to pick up a free kit.
Each Opioid Rescue Kit contains 2 does of the opiate reversal medication, Narcan, a drug deactivation kits, a rescue breathing pocket mask, fentanyl testing strips, along with resources for recovery and treatment.

How to Give Narcan
Step 1
- Take the spray out of the box
- Peel back tab with circle to open
Do not remove until ready to use!
Step 2
- Hold with thumb on bottom of plunger and first and middle fingers on either side of the nozzle
Step 3
- Tilt person's head back and provide support under the neck with your hand
Step 4
- Gently insert tip of nozzle into nostril until your fingers are against bottom of nose
- Press plunger firmly to give dose
- Remove the spray after given the dose
Step 5
- Wait and watch person closely
- If no response in 2 minutes, repeat the steps and give the second dose in the box
Step 6
- Call 911 ASAP if you haven't done so yet
- Roll person on side and place them in the "recovery position"

Signs of an Opioid Overdose
Troubled Breathing
- Slow, shallow breaths
- Snoring sounds
- Gasping for air
- Choking or gurgling
Unresponsive
- No response to loud sounds or touch
- Yell name, "Are you ok?"
- Firmly rub knuckles on sternum (center of chest)
Other Signs
- Blue lips or fingernails
- Pale or gray skin that feels cool or clammy
- Pinpoint pupils
- Pulse is slow
